Chapter Fourteen

In the following days, Cymin continued to rise early and practice circulating fei’lux as Laithondi had instructed. He spent the rest of his mornings shadowing Mazilane and Hiral on outings to film establishing shots of the city’s landmarks. After that, he and Yinni lit out across the city to purchase supplies the cameras and cameramen required for the journey north. The work was tiring, but it also gave him an opportunity to explore sections of the city he’d never visited before.

Magecraft engineering warehouses as pungent and crowded as any spice market did frantic trade in an endless assortment of screws, resonance crystals, transmission wires and fuses. The chemists at the industrial apothecary, on the other hand, moved at the slow, steady pace suited to people who regularly handled volatile and explosive compounds. They double-checked Cymin’s lists and corrected his pronunciations of their many unfathomable concoctions before sending him on his way with a wooden crate stamped with more skulls than a case of rat poison.

In the midst of shopping, he happened to pass a travel agency. Posters of exotic locales hung from the agency’s eaves like blessing-banners. Many depicted scenic panoramas of the canal city of Yanyeo with misty silhouettes of Storm Towers rising like giant lighthouses in the background. For perhaps the first time in his life, Cymin realized that he could admire the splendid scenes of floating markets and flower-strewn lagoons without dread gripping him. He paused to admire a poster depicting a nightscape of pleasure-houses and music halls all aglow with colorful lanterns. Their lights reflected in the dark canal waters like stars while a full moon hung high in the sky overhead.

Yanyeo is actually a very pretty place, isn’t it? Then Cymin noticed the prices listed for a trip to the city and he broke into a wide grin. And I’m being paid to go!

After that, he took on more errands and outings with even greater relish. He even found it funny rather than eerie when after two hours of searching, he stepped into a dim, side-alley tinker shop and was greeted not by any living soul but by hundreds of disembodied lenses focusing on him from shelves like watchful eyes. A note on the counter informed him that the shop’s owner would return from lunch in half an hour and to occupy himself until then.

Cymin nearly missed the temple’s evening curfew that day, and the one after it too. Those same evenings he passed out still dressed and sitting on his cot with his face in the book about Minroa Haeyi. Every time, he jolted awake in the dead of night with his head full of confused, half-dreamed recollections of the man’s observations of Saigrath.

Every day, he rose earlier than the sun and practiced the exercises Laithondi had taught him until he was dripping with sweat and plastered in dazed moths and honeybees. Despite the flurry of insects, his ability to draw down fei’lux truly seemed to improve. Maybe even a little too much.
